Setup your privacy
The second step in our 25 steps to make money on facebook is to edit the privacy settings of your facebook account. Before I tell you
what settings I prefer, I would like to remind you that these settings are for your privacy (not my privacy) so please if you don’t agree with me about any of the following points, don’t do it… in other words feel free to do whatever you feel comfortable with.
Although, that you can do a lot of changes on the privacy settings, I prefer to keep most of them on the default. Just a few changes you should do it on the Profile, Search, and (Poke, message and friend request) sections.

Profile:
In the profile privacy settings section, only your friends should be able to see your profile. Some people keep their profile open for everybody, they think that in this way they will get more friends, but guess what they are wrong… for psychological reasons peoples will be more interested in your friendship when they can’t see your profile. In the other hand, by keeping your profile view allowed only for your friends, you will be sure that no strangers can write on your wall.
Profile privacy settings gives you the ability to select different settings for each section of your profile, I prefer to select the option "Only My Friends" for everything except the following:
Status Updates
Videos tagged of you
Photos tagged of you
Market Place (although that I don’t prefer to use it, and we will talk about this later)
Hot or Not (it won’t appear if you didn’t install the application)
Hotness (it won’t appear if you didn’t install the application)
Are you interested (it won’t appear if you didn’t install the application)
For all the above fields I prefer to select the option "All My Networks And All My Friends", this will give you more exposure and won’t allow any stranger to mess with your profile. You have to think about your Status Updates, Videos tagged of you, and Photos tagged of you as advertising materials, which will encourage peoples to request your friendship, therefore we want to allow everyone to see them by selecting the option "All My Networks And All My Friends".

The applications Hot or Not, Hotness, and Are You Interested are more convenient for women than for men
and beside other applications like (Fun Wall) they are very important and essential for popularity.
For those of you who don’t know what "All My Networks" means, it means that everybody in my network and everybody in my friends’ networks.
Search:
In the search privacy settings section, for the question "Which Facebook Users Can Find Me in Search?" select the option "Everyone". Now I want you to know that at the beginning in order to get enough friend requests, we have to allow everyone to find your profile in search, but later on we will change it and I will tell you in another post when to change it. I know that some of you will think that this option will put your profile in search engines like Google, and my answer is: No it won’t do that. This option for the facebook local search, only the signed-in facebook members can use this search. To make sure not to put your profile on search engines like Google, uncheck the option "Create a Public Search Listing…." which is directly underneath the previous question "Which Facebook Users Can Find…".
Now for the section "What Can People Do With My Search Results" I prefer to check only the following:
See Your Picture
Poke You
Add You As A Friend
I prefer not to check "Send You A Message" and "See Your Friend List"
Click on the picture to enlarge it.
Some people checks all the above options and some of them checks only "See Your Picture" and "Add You As A Friend". I don’t agree with both of them because if you allowed everyone to send you a message then believe me you will get a lot of unwanted messages and you will reduce your chances in getting enough friend requests. If you allowed everyone to see your friend list you will reduce your chance to get enough friend requests and you will allow some facebook accounts hackers to see how much friends you have, and if you have a lot of friends then they will be more interested to get your account.
In the other hand, allowing people to poke you is very important at the beginning, that because a lot of people don’t want to add you as a friend before they check your profile to see if they have something in common with you. When they poke you, you will get the ability to check their profile too, then if you think that they might be good people then you can poke them back, if not don’t poke them back… and that’s it. But later on when you will get a lot of friends and when you become popular in the facebook society, you need to uncheck this option to allow only your friends to poke you that because you will receive a lot of pokes everyday which is really annoying.
Poke, message and friend request:
As we said above only your friends can see your full profile, but in facebook if you poke somebody, if you send a message to somebody, or if you requested a friendship from somebody she/he will be able to see your profile for two weeks (the same if somebody poked you and you poked back, or if somebody sent you a message and you replied).
Click on the picture to enlarge it.
However, it doesn’t mean that they can see your full profile, because in this section of privacy setting you will specify what those people can see. I prefer to check only the following:
Basic Info (It’s so ridiculous that some people don’t allow you to see their basic info, if I have poked you in order to check your profile to see if we have something in common before adding you as a friend… how I will know that if I can’t even see your basic info!!!)
Videos tagged of you (We already allowed everyone to find it in the search, so there is no meaning to disallow it here)
Photos tagged of you (The same as the videos)
Status Updates (The same as the videos and photos)
Posted Items (Posted items are important to be allowed here and you will know why later on in this series)
Groups (Groups will tell those people what kind of person you are, it will help them to decide if they want to be a friend of you or not)
Finally, you might ask why I want you to know my preferred selections for the privacy settings, the answer will be exactly the same as I said in my last post… your account and privacy settings will affect the amount of exposure your profile will get, which will affect the number of friends you have and the quality of your facebook friends, and all of that will affect how much money you can make on facebook.
If you are interested in following my tactic to make money on facebook, I encourage you to get your account on facebook and to finish your privacy settings as soon as possible, because in the next post (step #3 - Be Social) we will start talk about something more interesting and you will need you facebook account to implement it. And don’t forget to subscribe to the RSS feed or by e-mail, so you don’t miss any post.

Hi Lara,
I came across your site via Entrecard. Looks interesting. I’ve been playing around with ways to have Facebook, MySpace and Twitter add to my blog traffic & income. All of this supplements my bookstore in Montreal. Anyways, I will follow your series and see what happens. Look for a friend request soon as well as an Entrecard advertising request.
Nice blog by the way!
Hi, I found you on Entrecard too. I too will be sending an ad request.
